Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such medications need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
