Comeback Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been won on hardcourt
A resurgent the Russian player claimed his initial championship for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.
The Russian, a former world number one, has had a torrid year, achieving just one win at the big events and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.
His inconsistency on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his service game in particular - led to him exiting of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with former trainer his previous coach.
Presently training with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, Medvedev has steadily advanced in the past month - climaxing in a hard-fought three-set win over Frenchman Moutet.
This represents Medvedev's maiden trophy following the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard surface after that period of 2023.
Victory also means he has secured 21 championships at 21 various competitions.
"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my children simultaneously, so to get a championship is really nice," commented world number 14 Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my younger daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six title deciders, featuring in the German tournament earlier this year.
The player's retrieving strategy and frequent emotional displays on the tennis court had prompted commentators to wonder if his ability to compete at the highest level was concluded.
Yet the athlete has made changes in the past month, striving to approach the net and play aggressively, supported by an improved serve.
He fought back from a break down in the initial set against the challenging opponent, winning four of the last five exchanges to take the lead.
The pair traded breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, bidding for his initial professional victory, gained dominance to push for a final set.
Moutet defended four initial chances in a tight deciding set before the champion broke to 15 to serve for the match.
Suitably, Medvedev secured the title with a shot at the net, with his opponent failing to control a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
